"Needless to say this is a dream come true, but it is far beyond any wildest dreams I could imagine. The location and the building are beautiful, but it is the opportunity to share a lifetime of joy in nature that is the real value. Birgit and I are leaving our visual legacy to this place. But perhaps more important will be the ideas and thoughts created here about humanity's connection to nature. This connection is more important now than it ever has been."

One of Canada's most prolific and celebrated artists is showcased at the historic Steamship Terminal. The Robert Bateman Centre has made its home in the building with a gallery on the second floor, educational and office space on the third floor, and a retail store called the Robert Bateman Gallery Shop located on the Belleville Street level.

The Robert Bateman Centre uses the power of Robert Bateman's art to inspire individuals, and particularly urban youth, to become personal change agents in how we treat our planet. The Centre is about art, about leadership, about engagement and about action. Through this new centre in Victoria, The Robert Bateman Centre will have a strong base from which to grow its programs nationally and internationally.

Gallery - Level 2

The exhibition in The Robert Bateman Centre Gallery displays work ranging from his largest original painting to his smallest drawing, crossing the years and continents in a collection of over 160 pieces - the largest ever assembled for public view. A total of ten galleries cover different aspects of Bateman's work, and two of these galleries are of special interest to youth and children.

Shop - Level 1

The Robert Bateman Gallery Shop offers a wide selection of original, finely crafted giftware by local artists personally selected by Robert and Birgit Freybe Bateman. The collection of gift items was chosen to illustrate a clear connection to art and design, with particular emphasis on the natural world. Handmade glassworks, jewellery, pottery, wood boxes and textiles as well as our collection of Robert Bateman books, posters and cards are just a few of the items you'll find at the Robert Bateman Gallery Shop.
